el Harakah Jurnal Budaya Islam (en: el Harakah Journal of Islamic Culture) is a journal published by Humas, Dokumentasi & Publikasi of Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. It aims to promote scientific publication on Islamic culture and local wisdom of Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
The scope included in this Journal of Islamic Culture covers: (1) The cultural traditions and practices rooted in Islam; (2) Islam and dynamics of local wisdom; (3) The unique characteristics of Indonesian Islam within its cultural diversity; (4) Dynamic of thoughts in Islamic culture; (5) Actual values of local wisdom and Islamic culture; (6) The historical and cultural roles of Islam in shaping societies; (7) The role of education in promoting Islamic culture; (8) The integration of Islamic faith of local tradition; (9) The impact of Islamic culture on business practices; and (10) Cultural divergence in Islamic civilization.
The first issue of this publication, named Jurnal at Tarbiyah, was published by Tarbiyah Faculty as the branch of IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The journal had been renamed after the change of the institution status into Islamic College (STAIN) in 1997, into el Harakah. It published three issues annually in 1997-2009. Since 2010, it publishes two issues on June and December, in English or Arabic language. The journal is accredited SINTA 2 based on the decree No. 355/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026 on 24 July 2026 by the Ministry of Research and Technology, for the period December 2023 to June 2028.
Beginning with Vol. 27 No. 1 (2025), el Harakah Jurnal Budaya Islam has implemented a thematic issue policy, in which each issue focuses on a particular topic within the broader field of Islamic culture and society. This editorial approach aims to strengthen the journal’s scholarly focus, foster more coherent academic discussions, and encourage deeper engagement with contemporary cultural and societal issues.
