Abstract

This article examines the architectural development within the Muslim community in Bali, focusing on patterns of acculturation and assimilation between Hindu and Islamic traditions. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using an acculturation and assimilation approach to analyze architectural culture in terms of function, aesthetics, and meaning. Conducted in Gelgel Village, Klungkung District, Bali Province, the study uses conceptual reconstruction based on interviews, documentation, and observations to synthesize the processes of architectural integration. The findings demonstrate that the fusion of Islamic and Balinese Hindu cultures creates a distinct architectural style in Gelgel Village. This fusion manifests in function, aesthetics, and symbolism, with four acculturation patterns identified. Assimilation was observed primarily in settlement layouts, characterized by the labyrinthine maputer-puter pattern influenced by the traditional Balinese pempatan agung spatial concept. This study contributes to the discourse on multiculturalism by showing how architectural forms embody interfaith harmony and cultural adaptation. Additionally, it fills a significant gap in research on Islamic architecture in non-Muslim-majority contexts, offering insights into how religious and cultural identities shape built environments in pluralistic societies.
