Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

The publication of an article in Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender is essential in developing a coherent and respected body of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the authors’ work and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. Therefore, it is important to establish ethical standards for all parties involved in publishing: authors, editors, editorial board members, reviewers, publishers, and the academic community. As the publisher of Egalita, Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang takes its role seriously and is committed to ensuring that advertising or commercial revenue does not influence editorial decisions.

Publication Decisions

The editors of Egalita are responsible for deciding which articles submitted to the journal will be published. The editors are guided by the journal’s editorial policies and the recommendations of the editorial board, and are subject to legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. Editorial decisions are based on the significance of the manuscript, originality, clarity, and relevance to the journal’s scope. The editors may confer with other editors or reviewers when making a decision.

Plagiarism Screening: Authors must ensure that their manuscripts are free from plagiarism and academic misconduct. All submitted papers will be checked using plagiarism detection software before the review process begins. The journal reserves the right to screen submitted papers at any time, and will report suspected plagiarism or duplicate publication to the relevant authorities.

Peer Review Process: Each manuscript is first assessed by the editors. If it is judged suitable for the journal, it is sent for double-blind peer review by two reviewers. Decisions regarding publication are based on the reviewers’ and the editorial board’s recommendations. Manuscripts submitted by members of the editorial board are subject to the same review procedure.

Fair Review: Editors evaluate manuscripts solely on their academic merit, without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political ideology.

Confidentiality: Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, editorial advisers, and the publisher.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used by editors in their own research without the author’s express written consent. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decisions: Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and helps authors improve their manuscripts.

Promptness and Competence: Reviewers who feel unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript, or who are unable to complete a review in a timely manner, should notify the editors and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality: Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents and must not be shared without permission.

Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively, with clear and constructive feedback, and should evaluate manuscripts solely on their intellectual content, without regard to the gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, citizenship, ethnic origin, or political ideology of the authors. Personal criticism is inappropriate.

Acknowledgment of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant work not cited by the authors and inform the editor of any potential overlap with other published work.

Reporting Violations: Reviewers must bring to the attention of the Editor-in-Chief any violation of publication ethics they find in a manuscript, or any information that may be a reason to reject its publication.

Conflicts of Interest: Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest, including those arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the manuscript, and decline to review when such conflicts exist.

Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards: Authors should present an accurate account of the research and its significance. Data must be represented clearly and honestly, without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate data manipulation. Methods should be described clearly so that the findings can be confirmed by others.

Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure their work is original, is not plagiarized, and has not been published elsewhere, and must properly cite or quote the work of others. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication: Authors must not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication, and must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal simultaneously.

Acknowledgment of Sources: Authors must give proper credit to the work of others and cite all sources that influenced their research.

Authorship: Authorship should be limited to those who have made significant contributions. All co-authors must approve the final manuscript and agree to its submission.

Data Access and Retention: Authors may be asked to provide the raw data connected with a paper for editorial review, and should be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Research Ethics and Legal Compliance: Authors should submit only work that has been conducted in an ethical and responsible manner and that complies with all relevant legislation.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could influence the research or the interpretation of its results. The publisher supports ethical publication practices and takes all reasonable steps to identify and prevent research misconduct.

Authorship and Contributorship

Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender expects all authors to have made genuine scholarly contributions to the work submitted for publication. Authorship should reflect substantial contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research and the preparation of the manuscript. The corresponding author must ensure that all appropriate co-authors, and no inappropriate co-authors, are included, and that all listed authors have approved the final version of the manuscript and agree to be accountable for their contributions and the integrity of the work as a whole.

Individuals who have contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship should be appropriately acknowledged or listed as contributors. Guest, gift, honorary, or ghost authorship is not acceptable. Any changes to the authorship or author order after submission must be justified to the editor and agreed upon by all authors concerned. The editor may request additional information regarding individual contributions when necessary.

Artificial intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of scholarly work. Authors remain fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts and must disclose the use of AI tools in accordance with the journal’s applicable policies.

Allegations of Research Misconduct

Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender is committed to addressing allegations of research and publication misconduct in accordance with the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Misconduct may include, but is not limited to, plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data, image manipulation, duplicate publication, inappropriate authorship, citation manipulation, and manipulation of the peer-review or publication process.

When an allegation is received, the editor will assess the information and supporting evidence and determine the appropriate course of action. The journal may request explanations from the authors, contact relevant reviewers or other parties, and seek assistance from the authors’ affiliated institutions or other appropriate authorities when necessary.

All allegations will be handled fairly, objectively, and confidentially, with due consideration for the rights of the parties involved. Authors will be given an opportunity to respond to the concerns raised. Where the available evidence indicates a potential breach of publication ethics, the journal will take appropriate action in accordance with COPE guidance. Such action may include rejecting a submitted manuscript, issuing a correction or retraction, publishing an expression of concern, or contacting the relevant institution for further investigation.

The journal aims to protect the integrity of the scholarly record and will not tolerate deliberate manipulation of research findings or the publication process.

Post-Publication Discussion

Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender supports scholarly discussion and constructive criticism of published articles to promote academic dialogue and maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.

Readers who wish to raise questions, submit comments, or report concerns regarding a published article may contact the editorial team at egalita@uin-malang.ac.id. Submissions should clearly identify the article concerned and provide sufficient information or evidence to support the issues raised.

The editor will assess each submission for its academic relevance, validity, and significance. Where appropriate, the original authors may be invited to respond, and the journal may facilitate publication of a scholarly comment, response, or other form of post-publication discussion. Such contributions may be subject to editorial assessment and, where appropriate, peer review.

If a post-publication discussion identifies a potential error or ethical concern that could affect the reliability of a published article, the editor will investigate the matter and determine whether further action, including a correction, expression of concern, or retraction, is necessary in accordance with COPE guidance.

Corrections and Retractions

Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender is committed to preserving the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of its published content. Published articles remain extant, exact, and unaltered as far as possible. When significant errors or concerns are identified in a published article, the editor will assess the available evidence and determine the appropriate action in accordance with COPE’s guidance on correcting the scholarly record.

Corrections

A correction may be published when an error or omission in a published article requires amendment but does not invalidate the overall findings or conclusions. Authors who discover significant errors in their published work must promptly notify the editor and cooperate in correcting the record.

Article Withdrawal

Withdrawal applies to manuscripts that have been submitted or accepted but not yet formally published. It may occur if the submitted version contains a significant error, if the manuscript was accidentally sent twice to Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender or to another publisher, or if the manuscript involves a breach of scientific ethics such as double submission, false claims of authorship, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, or fraudulent use of data. Authors who become aware of such a breach may withdraw their manuscript by submitting a letter of withdrawal addressed to the editorial board. If a breach is identified by the editors before publication, the manuscript will be returned to the author with a letter from the Editor-in-Chief.

Retractions

An article may be retracted when there is clear evidence that its findings or conclusions are unreliable because of major errors or research misconduct. Retraction may also be warranted in cases involving plagiarism, self-plagiarism, redundant or double publication, false claims of authorship, fake authors, fabricated or falsified data, compromised peer review, or other serious ethical violations that undermine the reliability or integrity of the publication. A retraction may be initiated by the editors, the authors, or their institutions, on the advice of the editorial board. In certain cases, the retraction notice may be accompanied by an apology for the earlier error and an expression of gratitude to those who revealed it.

The purpose of retraction is to correct the scholarly record and alert readers to unreliable research, rather than to punish the authors. When an article is retracted after publication, the following measures will be applied:

  • A retraction note titled “Retraction: [article title]”, signed by the authors and/or the editor, is published in the paginated part of a subsequent issue of the journal and listed in the contents list.
  • The online article is preceded by a screen containing the retraction note, to which the article’s link resolves; readers can then proceed to the article itself.
  • The original article is retained unchanged, except for a watermark on the PDF indicating on each page that it is “retracted.”
  • The retraction note states the reasons for retraction and advises readers not to rely on the article’s findings and conclusions.

Expressions of Concern

When serious concerns have arisen but the available evidence is insufficient to reach a conclusive decision, the editor may issue an expression of concern while further information or an investigation is awaited.

Article Removal: Legal Limitations

In an extremely limited number of cases, it may be necessary to remove an article from the online database of Egalita: Jurnal Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender. This will only occur where the article is clearly defamatory, a hoax, infringes others’ legal rights, is the subject of a court order, or endangers state security. In these circumstances, the metadata (title and authors) will be retained, while the text will be replaced with a screen indicating that the article has been removed for legal reasons.

Article Replacement

Where an article, if acted upon, might pose a serious health risk, the authors may wish to retract the flawed original and replace it with a corrected version. In these circumstances, the retraction procedures will be followed, except that the retraction notice will include a link to the corrected, republished article and a history of the document.

Editorial Procedures

Decisions regarding corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern will be made by the editor based on the available evidence, the seriousness of the issue, and relevant publication ethics guidance. Authors will normally be given an opportunity to respond, and the journal may consult the authors’ affiliated institutions or other relevant authorities when necessary.

Correction and retraction notices will clearly identify the affected article and explain the reasons for the editorial action. Retraction notices will be linked to the original article, and the original publication will remain accessible with a clear retraction notice wherever possible, so that the scholarly record is corrected transparently. The journal will not silently remove or alter a published article except where removal is required by law or exceptional circumstances.

Conflict of Interest

A conflict of interest occurs when personal, financial, institutional, or professional relationships could influence—or appear to influence—research conduct or publication. Given the journal’s focus on gender equality and justice, which often involves sensitive social, cultural, and religious issues, full transparency is critical.

Authors must disclose all actual or potential conflicts upon submission, or immediately if one arises prior to publication, and must acknowledge all sources of institutional, private, and corporate financial support for the research. Editors and reviewers must disclose competing interests and recuse themselves from handling affected manuscripts.

When an undisclosed conflict is reported, the Editor-in-Chief conducts a preliminary review, notifies the authors, and requests a signed declaration (and may contact affiliated institutions if necessary). If an undisclosed conflict is confirmed, remedies range from publishing a correction or editorial notice to article retraction, depending on severity.

Intellectual Property Rights

Authors must comply with the law and research ethics in treating the objects of their research, and must pay attention to the legality of their material sources and to intellectual property rights.
