Mappadendang: Values of Togetherness in the Bugis Tribe and Their Implications in Social Studies Learning
Abstract
This study explores the mappadendang tradition as one of the cultural heritages of the Bugis community that embodies strong values of togetherness, cooperation, and social solidarity. Historically performed as an expression of gratitude for abundant harvests, mappadendang is manifested through collective rituals, rhythmic pounding of rice, and various communal activities that strengthen social bonds. This research aims to identify the values of togetherness embedded in the mappadendang tradition and analyze their relevance and possible integration into Social Sciences (IPS) learning at MTs DDI Amparita. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation analysis to capture the cultural meaning of the tradition and its educational potentials. The findings show that mappadendang encompasses essential social values, including cooperation, solidarity, tolerance, shared responsibility, and cultural identity reinforcement. These values align closely with the goals of IPS education, which emphasize social skills, cultural understanding, and character development. Integrating mappadendang into IPS learning can enhance students’ appreciation of local wisdom, strengthen community-based learning, and promote contextual learning experiences that reflect real-life cultural practices. The study concludes that local culture–based learning is crucial for fostering students’ cultural literacy and cultivating a cohesive and socially responsible generation. The results also highlight the need for educators to design learning strategies, such as collaborative projects, case studies, and field observations, that engage students with local cultural traditions as meaningful learning resources.
