Abstract

This study investigates the use of Insha’i (performative) sentences in the opening lines of poems by Omar Abu Risha, focusing on their rhetorical functions and their role in shaping poetic meaning and emotional expression. It aims to identify the types of Insha’i sentences employed by the poet, examine their frequency and structural patterns, and analyze their contribution to the development of poetic discourse. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method, combining the classification of linguistic and rhetorical structures with an analysis of their semantic and expressive functions. The findings indicate that Insha’i sentences account for 39.9% of the structures examined in the poetic openings. Interrogation is the most frequently used form, followed by vocative expressions, while imperative, prohibitive, exclamatory, and optative forms appear in varying frequencies. These structures function not merely as grammatical devices but also as expressive strategies for conveying doubt, longing, alienation, emotional tension, and reflection. The study concludes that Insha’i sentences play a significant role in establishing the emotional atmosphere of the poem, directing the reader’s interpretation, and strengthening the rhetorical and aesthetic impact of its opening. This research contributes to Arabic literary criticism by providing a focused analysis of the relationship between rhetorical structure and poetic meaning in Omar Abu Risha’s poetry.
