Abstract

This study investigates the contrast between attached and detached first- and second-person pronouns in the Qur’anic discourse of the al-Hawameem surahs, focusing on how their contextual distribution contributes to meaning construction, discourse organization, and rhetorical communication. Rather than treating pronouns solely as grammatical markers, the study examines their interaction with shifts in speaker–addressee relations and the communicative contexts of the Qur’anic verses. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, the study analyzes selected Qur’anic verses in which attached and detached pronouns occur in contrasting configurations, with particular attention to their grammatical functions, discourse contexts, and semantic and rhetorical effects. The analysis demonstrates that pronoun contrast performs several interconnected functions. First, it strengthens textual cohesion by connecting different components of the Qur’anic discourse and reducing unnecessary repetition. Second, shifts between first- and second-person pronouns organize the relationships among Allah, the Prophet, and human interlocutors, thereby structuring multiple levels of dialogue. Third, the alternation between attached and detached forms produces semantic and rhetorical variation that directs interpretation and intensifies communicative impact. The findings further show that pronoun patterns are closely related to theological and social contexts, including divine authority, prophethood, resurrection, divine mercy, human responsibility, and the relationship between God and His servants. The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating that the contrast between attached and detached first- and second-person pronouns functions as a discourse mechanism that simultaneously integrates grammatical structure, textual cohesion, rhetorical movement, and theological meaning. Thus, pronouns in the al-Hawameem surahs operate not merely as grammatical referential devices but as active elements in constructing dialogue, directing interpretation, and revealing the communicative and rhetorical dimensions of Qur’anic discourse.
