The Duality of Life and Death in The Poetry of Ashja' al-Sulami/ ثنائية الحياة والموت في شعر أشجع السلمي

Mohamed Fadhel Ali, Muhammad Nuri Abbas

Abstract

This research aims to study the antithetical duality of life and death in the poetry of Ashja' al-Sulami, analyzing how this duality is embodied in his poems and its impact on the reader. This is achieved by investigating the manifestations of the life-death duality in Ashja' al-Sulami's poetry, exploring and analyzing the nature of this duality, and examining how it is used as an expressive tool to highlight human emotions and internal conflicts. Through the study of the texts, the research seeks to determine how al-Sulami addressed this duality and to uncover the implications that made his poetry a space transcending hope and despair. It also aims to analyze the symbols related to life and death used in al-Sulami's poetry. The significance of this study lies in its analytical examination of an important aspect of Ashja' al-Sulami's poetry that has not received sufficient independent study: the existential dimension represented by the life-death duality. We will endeavor to shed light on the influences that shaped al-Sulami's perceptions of life and death, and how these concepts intertwined with other elements in his poetry, such as separation, longing, and mortality. Through the study of the texts, we can see how al-Sulami, through his words, was able to embody human emotions and make the reader experience his suffering during his journey between existence and extinction.
