THE PARADIGM OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION: EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN MODERATE ISLAMIC CHARACTER

Adi Kuswandi

Abstract

This article discusses the Islamic education paradigm and the cultivation of moderate Islamic character as a response to the challenges of radicalism and to maintain harmony between nations. The method used is a literature study, utilizing similar studies in other articles as data. The educational paradigm has evolved in every milieu, necessitating both cooperative and competitive attitudes. Various educational paradigms now experience tug-of-war, conflicts, and even hegemony according to the nature of the globalization era. Paradigms significantly influence the education system itself, serving as its spirit and conceptual framework. Neil Postman acknowledges paradigms as narrative mediums continuously shaping human history and the future. Education paradigms are essential comprehensive perspectives underlying educational system designs. From the Islamic perspective, education in line with human nature is crucial for fulfilling human functions, roles, and existential essence before Allah. Islamic education plays a vital role in family foundations, shaping moral behavior, fostering belief in Allah, and serving as the primary foundation for moral education in Indonesian society. Given the prevalent societal tensions, particularly interfaith and intergroup conflicts, studying Islamic Education Paradigms to strengthen moderate Islamic character becomes imperative to counter radicalism and maintain harmony domestically and globally. Various paradigms exist, including Formist, Mechanistic, and Organic paradigms, each with its distinct characteristics and implications. Promoting moderate Islamic behavior involves fostering acceptance of diversity, leveraging competent resources, and partnering with parents and positive environments to nurture children's moderate attitudes. In conclusion, understanding and addressing educational paradigms are essential in enhancing moderate Islamic values and fostering societal harmony amid diversity.
