The Effectiveness of Audio-Visual–Based Sam’iyyah Syafawiyyah Method on Students’ Arabic Speaking Skills

Abstract

Developing Arabic speaking skills (mahārah al-kalām) remains a major challenge in Arabic language education, as many learners have limited opportunities for meaningful oral practice, low self-confidence, and insufficient exposure to authentic language input. Integrating the Sam’iyyah Syafawiyyah method with audio-visual media has the potential to address these challenges by providing structured listening and speaking practice in meaningful contexts. This study examines the effectiveness of the audio-visual-based Sam’iyyah Syafawiyyah method in improving Arabic speaking skills (mahārah al-kalām) among ninth-grade students at MTs Miftahul Khaer Mare, Bone Regency, Indonesia. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. A total of 52 students participated, divided equally into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test speaking assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test. The results reveal a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental group achieving a higher post-test mean score (89.08) compared to the control group (83.60). The t-test analysis indicates a significance value below 0.05, confirming that the Sam’iyyah Syafawiyyah method integrated with audio-visual media has a positive and significant effect on students’ speaking performance. These findings suggest that the integration of structured listening-speaking drills with audio-visual materials effectively enhances pronunciation accuracy, fluency, vocabulary usage, and students’ confidence in oral communication. Therefore, this method is recommended for Arabic language instruction to foster more interactive and communicative learning environments.
